Doodles and Felting........

Hi everyone,

As promised in a recent post, here are a couple of finished pieces to show you. Firstly, a cushion with a new design for our Doodle Day Workshop. The design possibilities are endless with this method and always great fun to create.

Meandering Doodle

We are running a Doodle Day Workshop at Fraddon Village Hall on 4th July. This pattern will be available to buy from The Shopping Shed soon.

Carolyn mentioned we had a jolly good time making felt on our 'turtle' day, here is a little book I've made using one of the felted pieces.

Felted Book

Just a quick reminder we are doing the first our Taster Sessions at Fraddon Village Hall next Tuesday 4th June. If there is anything you're interested in trying just drop us an email or phone either Carolyn or myself.
These sessions will be a great opportunity to try something new in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere without any pressure.

As usual all the information can be found on our web site.

Bye for now

Beyond Patchwork Taster Sessions at Fraddon Village Hall.

The idea for the sessions is for you to try something new that will enhance your work, with guidance from us.  You will not be making a finished item during these sessions but you will leave with samples that you can work into at your leisure.   We will have a selection of our own work on display, so you can see how to integrate these techniques into wall hangings etc.
You can choose from Painted Bondaweb, Markel Paintstiks, Acrylic Paints, Vanishing Fabric and Tyvek and we will be on hand to give you some advice on Free Machine Quilting, should you like to try.
As with all our normal workshops we supply any art materials that you need, but there will be a small charge if you wish to try Vanishing Fabric, Bondaweb and Tyvek.  You will just need to bring your sewing machine, normal sewing kit and a selection of fabric.
The sessions will run from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm to 4:00pm on the following Tuesday’s in June & July:
Tuesday 4 June
Tuesday 11 June
Tuesday 25 June
Tuesday 2 July
Tuesday 9 July
Tuesday 30 July
The cost of each 2 hour session will be £10.00 per person, and includes coffee, tea and biscuits.
To book a date or if you would like more information please email us at: beyondpatchwork@btinternet.com

We look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes

Sue & Carolyn

My New favourite thing..........felting

Sue & I met up yesterday and had our first Turtle Tuesday for a little while, and it was lovely.

We had a play with our Turtle Challenge by adding some sheers to our own pieces and then some acrylic paint to each others!  Very nerve racking but we did it and the results are looking promising.  Next time I think we will be working on our own by quilting them.

Anyway, after warming up on the challenge we just had to tip out all our buys from last week and have a little play with them.  Fancy saying we have 'no self control'.......well really, I reckon we were very controlled and only had a small (ish) bag!!

My new favourite thing must be felting........fabulous.  I have left the stash at Sue's otherwise I may not get any other work done!!

Then in the afternoon we started on a new Doodle design for our Doodle Cushion workshop and The Shopping Shed.  They are looking very good and we will show you a photo once they are completed.

Thanks for looking

Carolyn

We have no self control...........

Yesterday Carolyn and I went for a little jaunt to Probus to see what Wingham Wool Work had to offer.
This was our first visit to one of these venues. On entering you are presented with a large plastic bag to hold your purchases. There was a glorious array of wool, fibres and yarns, so much temptation. Everything was sold by weight and of course the materials feel quite light, you could easily get carried away and yes we did.
However, we have a gorgeous stash of goodies to show for it.

more temptation
definitely need some of this

Carolyn's taken it all home, but next time she visits we will inspect and stroke our wears so we'll show you then.

Another outing yesterday was an invitation to the Tate St. Ives for the opening of their summer exhibition. My man and I got dressed up and had a lovely evening, fabulous Barbara Hepworth sculptures and Patrick Heron silk screen prints. Obviously I couldn't take photographs of the exhibition but here is a few of St. Ives.

love visiting St. Ives

More photos from yesterday.......

Almost there - Chris

As Sue said in yesterday's blog, we have had a lovely 6 weeks with our ladies doing the Quilting and Textile Design Course.

Adding layers
They all really embraced the new techniques and have added them to great effect in their finished covers.
Just a bit more paint!

The selection of techniques included painted bondaweb; free machine; tyvek; free machining on vanishing fabric; printing and layers of sheers.

All of the designs have been created by our ladies andhave been developed over the last 6 weeks, I am sure you agree, the effects are lovely.

Work in progress

It's all in the stitching

The sample books that they completed along the way are looking fabulous and will be a great resource in the future.  Sue included photos of them yesterday.

I hope that you have enjoyed seeing all of our photos from this course, and we look forward to sharing our next workshop with you.

Quilting & Textile Design Course completed......

Changing the surface of fabric by layering techniques is the idea behind our Quilting & Textile Design Course and our latest students grasped this with both hands.
They kindly gave us permission to take lots of snaps while they worked, but I'm sorry to say the battery on my camera ran out. However, Carolyn continued to take some photos and will show you those soon, but for now I'll show you how far I got......

layering techniques onto background fabric
free motion design sample
sample book pages
sample book pages with free motion onto soluble fabrics
sample book pages with printing and soluble plastic
sample book pages
If you've been following us through the stages we think you'll agree the work our students have achieved is wonderful. They have sampled a variety of mixed media techniques and applied this knowledge to create some gorgeous coverings for their sample books. The books themselves are looking fat and full with all the samples, which are now their own resource for future work.

Probably just as well my camera gave up or you would have been wading through a stream of snaps, pop back soon and see Carolyn's.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our ladies, who were a fabulous bunch to work and laugh with, we put the world to rights many times, and to Carolyn who brought home-made Devonshire scones with jam and cream today, delicious.

Thanks for reading and we'd love to hear from you so please leave us a message.

Quilting and Textile Design Course

Hi everyone,

Our students have just completed  week 5 of our Textile Design Course, we've had a three week break so we were really looking forward to seeing the progress in their sample books, we were not disappointed.

Everyone has got into the swing of layering mixed media techniques to change the surface of their background fabric.

This is just a small selection, but each page and sample was just as lovely as the ones we've shown you here.

Thank you to the students for allowing us to share their work with you. We're back for week 6 on Tuesday, so we'll show you more then.

We have spaces on our Free Cut and Stencil Wall Hanging Workshop at Fraddon Village Hall on 23rd May and
Coast & Country Crafts & Quilts, Perranarworthal for our Fuchsia Box Workshop on 6th June.
Details can be found on our web site.

Bye for now
Sue
